When it comes to cartoonist who inspired characters in the Graffiti movement the first name that comes to mind is Vaughn Bode & rightfully so, his work was simply fresh & funky to keep it simple. another highly inspirational artist is Mr Ralph Bakshi. most people know his name from films such as "COOL WORLD" starting Brad Pitt & Kim Basinger & "THE LORD OF THE RINGS" animated film. another well known film of his is "WIZARDS", definitely one of my favorite animated films. check out the trailer below as well as some of Mr Bakshi's work, i've also posted a pic of a piece i did a few years ago inspired by his work. Last month Abstrak, Venum & me were in Tampa,Fl visiting our families. that same weekend Mouse of Enigma Dance Crew was having his fifth annual event "SIRQUIX 5", the event has grown in the past 5 years & is now Tampa/St Pete's main event. we decided to go show support & enter the jam, it had been a while since we danced in our home town, it definitely felt good to go back & rep in the city SKILLMETHODZ was established. check out the battles from the event. While in L.A last month Luigi, Kid David, Stash, Luke, Lady One, Danny G & yours truly decided to go ride one late night. we probably skated for about 4 hours that night. we started at a parking garage near Danny G & Beastmode's place, then ended up in some hills in the north Hollywood area. super ultimate adventure to say the least. here's a clip from that night. Here's some insight on what goes in my head sometimes & where i find inspiration from. when i did the photo shoot with Maurice in Holland i wanted to somehow incorporate the inspiration i get from Graff. i figured i'd mimic a pose from one of my favorite mugsy sketches. the sketch was done by WEST "IBM,FC,TC5". the image is from the book Mascots & Mugs "The characters & cartoons of subway graffiti" by David Villorente & Todd James.

I met Maurice Van Der Meijs a few months back when i went to Rotterdam to judge the "World Bboy Classic" event. Maurice asked me if i had a few minutes to take some shots, i definitely took advatage of the opportunity, i mean after all Photography is an incredible art form & to be asked to be photographed is an honor in my opinion. the end result was the picture i currently use for my blog. his patience & drive to get that right shot pays off in the end result of all his work. When i saw him again at this year's IBE event i knew i had to take some time out to get more shots done, Maurice didn't hesitate he grabbed his equipment, Luigi & i followed & below are a few shots from that session in Holland. While i was in Nagoya, Japan i came across this shop "GREAT VINTAGE", the amount of sick items in this shop is unreal, from denim to leather to fly kicks & much much more. don't sleep on these second hand stores, they have vast amounts of quality pieces, the hunt for fresh textiles make it all worth while & truly worthy of an ultimate adventure.

This past weekend we were invited to take part in Nagoya's annual Bboy Battle "Hip Hop Dynamte". Abstrak, Flipz, Flea Rock, Moshe & myself went to rep the crew in the 5 on 5 battle. We lost to All Area Crew in a 2 to 3 vote from the judges. no big deal, you win some, you loose some, on to the next one. our visit in Japan was probably one of the best times we've had abroad. we were able to catch Halloween in Nagoya & make it back in time to NYC for Halloween here, now thats jet setting to the next level, LOL. here go some pics of our time there, stay tuned for more ultimate adventures. In 2006 Venum & Luigi battled in Osaka, Japan. this is only the tie breaker round vs Mortal Kombat crew from Japan. one of the judges was full a sleep during this battle, LOL. they lost this battle based on the judges decision. at the end of the day, win, loose or draw it really doesn't matter, what matters is that we are still active & relevant in this dance. A few years back "2008" during Freestyle session Venum, Flipz & myself had a dope exchange with MZK "Casper, Smurf & Julez. This clip is raw, gritty & grimey, but the to me the best gem you can gain from this is the cypher etiquette & mutual respect both sides display even in this heated cypher battle. just shows that you can have a heated exchange without having to disrespect the other side. power & respect to all. Flipz upgrades my iFlip camera.

A few months back some of the Methodz men came to NYC from L.A to perfrom with the Groovaloos, when i got to the theatre i saw that Flipz had a wide lens on his iFlip video camera "iFlip cameras don't have lens adapters", i own one so ofcourse i wanted a wide lens on mines too. he told me he went & bought metal bond & glued the lens on to the iFlip. he's actually accidentally dropped it a few times & the lens still attached, that metal bond is no joke! soon as i got to L.A a few days ago i had to get him to upgrade mines. heres some pics of the step by step process in case any of you outhere own one & want to upgrade. "Skeme, i know you got 2 of them, you should definitely upgrade yours!".

These are the items needed. "Total cost is about $50.00. lens & metal bond"

i own the Mino model. "720p, 8gig" so the lens adapter i had to use was the 25-37mm.

you dont need a lot of the metal bond, but make sure you mix the 2 contents together well

apply evenly on the lens ring, clean up any over flowing bond on the inside of the ring with the Qtip so it doesn't get on the lens when you attach it.

make sure its glued to the metal ring on the lens & not the body of the camera, they're 2 different types of metals. by having the lens on the ring already it becomes a weight on the bond, just let it sit for a few hours, keep it on a flat surface so the bond dries evenly & you're good to go, Walla!!!!

now you can also buy a fish eye lens since you can unscrew this lens & use other ones from the same brand "Platinum plus by Sunpak". Enjoy!!!, Zooooooooooommmmmmm....

My boy Godzi & his queen Lee Sete flew me over to Porto to do a workshop at their dance studio "Cyphlava". the workshop was super fresh. the next day i got to go sight seeing in Porto & Ribeira. Porto is world famous for their wine so i had a chance to go to one of their main wine cellars, learned some history on their wine & do some wine tasting. Godzi asked me to do a piece at their studio the night before i left, i didn't hesitate on the offer so i rocked a quick outline & blessed the spot. overall just an incredible time, i will definitely be back there again soon. the next stop was Holland for IBE, stay tuned for that post. pics & clips coming soon. pz..

Sup Family. as some of ya may already know, Crazy Legs has a online Radio show "LUNCH BREAKS" from monday thru Friday 1:45PM Till 4PM "Bronx Time". along with his host DSTROY of the ARSONISTS Crew. Legs spins all the illest joints in the show, it's a live USTREAM show you can watch & join in on the chat room & kick it with other heads in the chat. My boy Chris from YARD 5 in Berlin blessed me with some cans before i came out to Prague, he knew i would get to paint while i was out here. the local heads put me up on this spot near a over pass on the highway. the day was nice enough to piant but too chilli to be doing a full out burner. i kept it simple with the 2 tone fill color & double border. no buff paint, no problem.. Enjoy!!!..

This is the final battle at Wake Up Jam 5 in Prague, Czech Republic. i was the nly judge at this event. the last battle was between Bboy Depone & Bboy Duszty. Bboy Depone here did a lot of transitions that have been done by other Bboys, one in particular is the Kmel transition from chair freeze to airchair. Duszty was just fresher & sticking to an originlal format, even incorporating moves from the 70's like the dead man freeze in does in his last solo. after the decision Depone called me out & well, just watch the clip & see for yourself. Enjoy.

The tradition of self promotion goes back centuries old, people from all walks of life have used different methods in one way or another to promote themselves. in Bboy culture aside from catching wreck & battling the use of personalized clothing items are also essential. the most commonly used form is the flock letter, usually in a old english font or cooper bold. this practice can be traced to early 70's biker gangs. Biker gangs use them on cut off denim jackets or leather vests. every gang has their system in which the members have to earn these patches, one just doesn't get the whole name at once. gradually through different actions & time in the gang you earn a patch at a time. the early 70's Bboys who grew up around these gangs, some who were either in those gangs or had siblings in them chose to adopt the use of these patches on T-shirts & denim jackets to represent their crew & individual names. this also created another incentive to keep training & continue to get better at their skills. no real Bboy wants to look whack! even more so while wearing their crew colors/patches. you're representing not only yourself but the whole crew & their history.

While i was in Helsinki, Finland my boys Focus & Hat Solo from the Flo Mo Crew told me about a spot they have there where they make these patches on the regular. i knew i had to go & get a couple of shirts made rightaway. for the crew patches i used a black flock banner with white vinyl old english letters & the Playboy bunny as the middle patch. the Playboy bunny has been a moniker used by Bboys since the early 80's. it just represents the flyness & swag a Bboy is supposed to have.

When i 1st moved to NYC from Tampa,FL in 1999 in pursue of knowledge & the dream of working as a dancer i sometimes had to dance in the street to make ends meet with some of the local street hitting crews such as United Street Artists "USA", The breeze Team, The Transformers with Zone TDK, Tic & Tac All Stars in Washington Square Park & also with Wayne Blizz "The Executioners/NYC Float Committee", an original Bboy from the 70's. while i performed with Wayne i had the blessing to learn some of these original 70's style shuffles. no 6 step, 5 step, 4 step, etc. these are straight up shuffles, the original format!. last year Pop Master Fabel "RSC/ZULU KINGZ" caught up with Wayne & his old nemesis from back in the days, legendary Bboy Zip to have them share their view & let the world know whats really real about this Rock dance of ours. watch carefully, take notes & by all means learn as much as you can from these warriors, this is the original format. much love, power & blessings to all the OG's for their contribution, Thank you all. Last weekend in Helsinki at the UK CHAMPS Finland qualifiers i had a dope exchange with Bboy Lamine from France. the back & forth session was at the end of the jam when Flo Mo & Ghost Crew were having their cypha battle. myself & Lamine kept to ourselves & said no words to each other, we were just simply exchanging rounds, after a short while a young Bboy came into our session & started to go full out competition style in his solos. Lamine & myself were just flowing through movements, different angles & dimensions not really going all out, we were both having the same conversation. after we left the event i told Lamine "That kid just jumped into our conversation wothout knowing what the topic was about" i was reffering to our back & forth session, Lamine said to me that was a great way of looking at it, i further explained to him that what we do is another form of communication, Music & Dance that is. the next day Lamine told me i had inspired him with what i said to him & it inspired him to make a short film tittled "CONVERSATION" based on the discussion we had the day before. here's the short film Lamine filmed & produced. This past Saturday & Sunday in Boston the Legendary Floor Lords crew held their 6th anual jam "UNITED STYLES" Jam, a 5 on 5 crew battle for a grand prize of 50,000 Thousand koala$. My crew SKILLMETHODZ entered the jam with only 4 members "Abstrak, Venum, Cloud & Luigi". after making it though the 1st the day on the preliminary round they then went on to the finals on sunday in a 3 way face off vs 2 crews "THE SQUADRON' & "WAR MACHINE", which are both made up of members from various crews who are really close to one another & come together as a super team in certain competitions, this being one of them. SKILLMETHODZ won the whole event with 1 man down & was the only actual real crew in the finals. Congrats to my brothers on this epic achievement, one that will not be forgotten for a long time. ENJOY!!!

This same scenario was also achived by SKILLMETHODZ last year in Taiwan when Flea Rock & Luigi entered a 3 on 3 battle & won the whole event. i think it's time to put things in perspective. Zoooooooooommmmm.....

3rd on August 21st we have "UK BBOY CHAMPS" Finish qualifiers. it's one of the longest running crew battles where the best crews from around the world come together 1ce a year to face off at the UK's legendary Brixton Academy. this year celebrates their 15th Anniversary.

Yesterday i flew to Belize for one of my regular gigs where i perform on a carnival cruise ship. i flew out of Newark to Miami at 6AM, then Miami on to Belize at 10:20AM. I made it all the way to the ships port only to find out my ship had been re-routed due to Hurricane Alex which by that time had already hit land in Mexico where i would've ported the next day & flown home from. so obviously i ended up rushing back to the airport making it just in time to get on the same plane i landed in Belize & take it back to Miami. once i landed in Miami i obviously ran into extra questioning at U.S Customs, i mean who flys to Belize for 2 hours & leaves rightaway!?!?!? LOL. after doing some more than detailed explaining to the customs officer i then proceeded to my next gate where my flight wasnt scheduled till about 8:40PM. I Finally made it home around 12AM. on a good note, Thanks to my Executive Platinum status with American Airlines i had First & Business class seats on all 4 flights. All in a days of work.. Zoooooooooommmm...

A Day At The Derby.

Last week i received the great news that my Brother Willie Martinez will be riding in the 136th running of the Kentucky Derby so immediately i booked my ticket to go to Louisville, Kentucky to go & support him. My older brother Willie or as the call him in the racing industry "Chilly Willy" has been riding for 20 years now & is one of the top jockeys in the nation. This Derby is the 5th in his career aboard the horse "Noble's Promise". Willie rode an incredible race, he took off the gate perfectly & rode the horse patiently. throughout the race Willie maintained within the leading horses, when the pack came around the last turn Willie took the lead in front of the 20 horse field, Down the last stretch Noble gave it all he had but this time around he came a little short coming in 5th place. That is still a great place to come in a race with 20 of the best horses from the U.S & around the world. We are proud of you Willie, Keep on rising to the top!!.

Here's another ultimate adventure from yours trully. 3 countries, 4 cities, 4 shows, 24 hours. ENJOY!!!

As usual i fly out to Miami then from there i go to Belize where i board carnival's ship "The Valor".

Once we make it to the port we have to take one these tender boats & drive out to sea to get on board.

Backstage with the rest of the cast from the show.

After the stage show we get to do our own show. street hitting style, we get the crowd involved. We mix comedy improv & of course we get to get loose & get the crowd hype.

Once we're done we get ready & head to the club on board & kick it with the cast & guests & wild out, no sleep for us, we have to be off the ship in the morning when we arrive in Cozumel Mexico so we can go home.

We always get lunch at this spot in Cozumel "La Choza". The staff there already knows us, really cool peeps, the food is off the hook!!!, always a must when we're in Cozumel, aside from the traditional plates, the Ceviche is got to be one of the best i've had in my entire life, word up.

This week my flights out of Cancun. i have to get on one of these Ferrys & cross over on a 45 minute ride to the other side where i still have to take another shuttle bus to the airport, that's another hour & 30 minute journey.

Finally get on board & take to the friendly skies on my way back home.

Tonight's my boy Mau's Birthday, The Trew Brew Krew is gonna celebrate his at Santo's with Dj Just Blaze rockin the house. no better way to end this ultimate adventure.. till the next one. Peace & Power to all..

So a fellow Bboy "Chaz" reached out to me & a few other peeps on a Bboy discussion board & asked some questions regarding the state of the scene now including the everlasting biting issue, copy cats, originality, being way too simple as a cop out to saying its foundation, & finding ones true self. i responded to him with a few words. the conversation can actually go forever & i have a lot more to add than these few paragraphs below. these are just a few points, using myself , my approach & experience as a source. feel free to add, ask any questions, debate, positive, negative, it's all good & welcomed. pz..

"Originality- Youtube/video watching - Biting"

Aight here it goes. part of being introduced to this dance is by seeing someone or a crew that you admire wether in person or by youtube/dvd videos, that normally follows by you trying to emulate them since they are your main source of inspiration & information. through that process most peeps also find out who the pioneers were, maybe a brief history of the dance & culture. by then they usually learn what biting is & very few actually snap from the carbon copy virus & develop their own approach, not really their own style, bcuz pretty much everythings already been done. so the best we can do is to have an approach that is specific to each one of us. the goal is that if you can only see the silhouette of a Bboy/Bgirl you can still tell who the Bboy/Bgirl is not by physical appearance but by they way they manifest through their movement. simple things like their hands when they top rock. the dimensions they extend their body to. the way their footwork can go from small & compound to broad & explosive, incorporating power moves & text in your rounds, all inclusive not separate, that way is not monotonous & predictable. instead aggressive yet smooth. flowing like water which can take any form. those are some of the few things that separate the unique from the obsolete. not the one move or non executed blow ups. its the subtle things, the details, the character that is developed throughout that process. thats what becomes original & new.

"Finding Ones True Self"

That's very tricky because with finding that unique approach there are several options that can be used separately or together. usually a Bboy/Bgirl will come up with a nickname i.e "Teknyc", thats the persona that i take when i hear the music that motivates me to move the way i do, the character that reacts to the music & vibe in the cypha. they say with time comes experience, so in my case with time i've been able to use everything in my life to motivate me apart from the music. all energies, positive & negative. i can use that to tell a story when i dance. after all music & dance is a form of communication. so i use them both to tell my story based on how i feel at that moment but all through that persona "Teknyc" which it is still me, because it is an extention of who i am since this is my passion, the best thing that has happened to me was when i dedicated myself to this dance. it changed my life forever. i know who i am, why i do it & i can tell my testimony verbally or physically. thats the difference between me & most of them. thats what Bboys/Bgirls need to learn & strive for so that they can elevate themselves & be able to stand out in an ocean of dancers who all mimic one another or usually all borrow from the same source without ever becoming the source themselves. so in the journey to finding ones true self sometimes you have to become someone else or adapt a persona in order to deconstruct the mind set that has already been established. i hope this isnt too off the wall for you. this convo is actually alot longer than these few paragraphs above, i hope that these few words do help in your project & help others understand this dance form a little more & the infinite ways & possibilities that exist.

My boy Mazzi "S.O.U.L Purpose" invited me to rock the stage with him at the Lyricist lounge benefit concert for Haiti. All the performances that night were incredible. The energy in the room was beautiful. I feel honored to have been a part of it.

A few days ago i went to my fellow crew mate & Graff mentor EWOKONE 5MH Studio to see what he's been up to, check some of his new work, get some pointers on painting canvases, etc. what i encounter was the work of a true master. EWOK is definitely one the hardest working artists outhere. With major canvas works, Massive murals running all over, Surf boards, Toys, Music skins, books & everything in between, there's very few outhere who can match his work ethic which combined with his skills is a recipe for absolute success. make sure you check in to his bolg from time to time to see what this ace is up to, you never know you might just get inspired..
